My android journey

Hello guys. Sorry if I don't hit all the points I want to get to in my first post. I have been using android for 5 months now. I have come to the conclusion android is just not for me. I'll try to be clear as I can. This is mainly for anyone on the fence about switching to android from IOS. First android apps have a lot of unlabeled buttons which make it very hard for people like us to use the apps. Even built in apps do not work very well with talkback at times. Second the audio system on IOS is a lot better. An example of this is the foreground focus thing in talkback. That is if you have music playing and talkback talks over the music it's not as smooth as the IOS and voiceover implementation. Third off the scrolling is a lot smoother for us on ios. The web browsing experience is defanatly better on ios compared to android. This is not a trash android post. Here is an article that helps to explain my reasons for not liking android. http://www.marcozehe.de/2013/04/05/switching-to-android-full-time-an-experiment/ So if you're using android successfully that is good for you. As for me I'll be selling my sprint galaxy s4 and my iPod touch 32 gb and purchasing myself an iPhone 5s when it comes out.

Post 2 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 0:26:53

OK. I'm a defanate tech nerd. I love to learn new things. I went cold turkey on android. I used nothing but android for 4 months or more. I just recently purchased an iPod touch 5 because I use taptapsee so much. I just find the apps so much easier to deal with on IOS and voiceover. Another problem I have with android. There is no consistent way to turn on talkback out of the box. Yes on stock android devices you can hold 2 fingers on the screen during the set up process when you first power on the device and wait for accessibility to come on but on a lot of these samsung or whatever devices that have branded versions of android accessibility is normally turned off by default. Where as IOS you just click the home button 3 times and you're straight. If that does not work just go over to itunes and enable voiceover that way.

Here is an audio post from twitter which also backs up my point and shows direct audio of some points I have made here. http://t.co/SBDpxn8H3O

Post 4 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 10:45:23

hmm, good try, labeling buttons is now in android 4.3 technically it can not be back ported to any other iteration of android do to the frame work of 4.3. It can be found now in the beta of talkback. Again austin my hats off to you, TapTapSee is coming to android by the end of this year. I am going to beta test it with my GS3 and report back. Note, my Gs3 has been rooted and now runs a custom rom so that is how I have 4.3.

Post 5 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 13:18:02

Well it's defanatly a lot more than just taptapsee that is the reason behidn my switch to IOS. Android is a good platform as well. But as for me I think I'll just stick with IOS. If anyone here is interested in a galaxy s4 on sprint let me know.

Post 6 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 14:23:47

I kinda figured that al ready but again my hats off to you for trying it.

Post 7 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 14:24:50

To be fare here, if it was not for my wife changing phones as much as I do I would not have my GS3 or a GS2, I would have just the Iphone5.

Post 8 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 17:37:25

I really do hope android comes farther along in accessibility. Nearby explorer is awesome. The firefox people are trying their best. I'm sorry but I say it will take android a few more years to be there with IOS. If anyone asks me to recommend a phone for accessibility I'm saying iPhone. I just had a friend switch to sprint and a galaxy s4 last month. I don't know how he is holding up on it. As for me I'm done with android for now. I don't want a nexus tablet laying around. There are some blind people that will swear by android. that is not me and I know it.

Post 9 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 28-Aug-2013 23:44:23

Lol I remember reading that you were making the switch to Android at almost the exact same time I made my switch to the iPhone. Though I started with an Android, I completely agree with everything you've said. It's come a long way... but it has a lot further to go before it's as accessible as an iPhone. The fact you can customize an Android is intriguing, and it's what kept me there for several years. But I was missing out on so many apps that I can now enjoy with the iPhone.

Post 10 by starfly (99956) on Thursday, 29-Aug-2013 14:10:41

I will agree with the app statement, the iphone has more apps for the blind then android, I am hoping I and others can change this. I will be working with TapTapSee along with other beta testers crossing my fingers this app takes off on android. I am hoping that LNS' takes off as well, its arived to android, see blind bargons. Kinda funny here, if it was not for my job I would sell my Iphone serie gets under my skin when asking her to do a business search. Google now kicks her pants in this arena.

Post 11 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Saturday, 31-Aug-2013 16:47:54

I heard siri will really improve in ios 7. We should start an apple vis campaign for google. The google app is really confusing with voiceover. I wished google would be more caring for accessibility. I'm sorry but the only google thing I will use is google now on my iPhone and gmail and that is it. Of course I use the google search. Android is out of the question for me until I see more to be done for accessibility and the user experience of android.

Post 12 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Saturday, 31-Aug-2013 23:56:28

OK guys. I have a question. Should I stay with sprint? Has anyone had LTE on them? I'm looking into switching to tmobile. I have very spotty sprint lte here. Quite frankly I'm sick of the slow lte roll out. How is tmobile? Does anyone live in the orlando area or experienced tmobile in Orlando? I don't mind paying 300 ETF to switch and pay 100 dollars on the iPhone 5s and then pay 20 a month or whatever. I just want to see what people use. Sprint has awesome phone audio. That is for sure. So in your opinion should I stick it out with sprint or jump to tmobile?

Post 13 by rat (star trek rules!) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 9:42:15

I much like AT&T, but that might not be an option. Personally from your choices i'd leave sprint, TMobile has more options with it being a GSM based system instead of CDMA

Post 14 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 13:00:07

I don't see my self switching back to at&t for now. You can pay 50 a month on tmobile for unlimited texting and talk and 500 mb data. 2 gb is 60 and unlimited data is 70. Plus you don't have to sign a contract either and you can pay for your phone every month instead of buying it right out. I think tmobile will work good for me. If at&t was not so expensive I'd go back to them but I'm interested in tmobile.

Post 15 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 23:01:03

Tmobile offers some amazing plans, but the friends I talk to who've got it have a really tough time with coverage. And they're not from the Orlando area, so I don't know what it'll be like for you. But from what I've been told (and heard for myself), there seem to be lots of dropped calls and issues with call quality in general.

Post 16 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 23:18:18

To jump to TMo now really is a question of where in the country you are. they have some really good coverage areas, and some really not. Either way, its probably an upgrade from sprint. Fortunately though, TMo are rolling out new LTE markets really rapidly. they're several markets ahead of even their own plans, and should close the gap with AT&T and VZW with in the next year.
I know some people who have no issues with TMo and others that do, but again, its really all going to come down to how good coverage is in your area.
Even though AT&T is a bit expensive, i've never had a dropped call, and usually always have LTE, no matter where I've been in the country.

Post 17 by starfly (99956) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 23:43:04

if you get there Iphone, get ready to find wyfi calling apps if your coverage is spotty, I have a Iphone from t-mobile and find my GS# rooted and running a custom rom gets better signel. Also I live where there are a lot of trees and the towers are spread out so that also has to do with my coverage. Also, t-mobile's Iphone has HD calling so if you get good signel you will get crystal clear calls.

Post 18 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Monday, 02-Sep-2013 15:11:31

Well I'm defanatly willing to give t-mobile a shot. That is for sure. I'm done with sprint that is for sure. I don't see verizon in my future and at&t was too expensive and they always seemed to change their plans. I really think t-mobile will be really good. If they are not now then they will defanatly improve.

Post 19 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Thursday, 05-Sep-2013 18:08:19

Hello to all. I'd like to correct a previous post I made. It turns out I was wrong on samsung disabling the accessibility setting. You can hold 2 fingers on the screen during set up and you will get the accessibility talking. at first I was under the impression samsung had disabled this on the s 4 I had on sprint. So I'll give that point back to android then.

Post 20 by starfly (99956) on Friday, 06-Sep-2013 10:03:03

this holds true for the galaxy S3 running 4.1.2 and not what :) I have done to my GS3.

Post 21 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Wednesday, 09-Oct-2013 13:39:38

For anyone that is curious I switched to t-mobile and love it. There data is really fast here. If I don't have lte then I have HSPA 4g. I have an iPhone 5 for the moment but I'll be getting a 5s in march when I can use my jump program for the first time. I have to wait 6 months for the first inital use of my jump program. Then I can use my second upgrade for he year whenever I want to. Jump is a program that is 10 bucks extra a month on your bill and it gives you the option to upgrade your phone twice in a year and it also gives you protection against theft or damage or malfunctions or whatever. I'd defanatly recommend t-mobile to anyone. These people are serious on upgrading their lte and their network in general.

Post 22 by starfly (99956) on Thursday, 10-Oct-2013 8:58:45

agreed, I have them and love it, both my 4.3 galaxy S3 and Iphone5 get crazy speeds when I have very good coverage.

Post 23 by softy5310 (Fuzzy's best angel) on Sunday, 13-Oct-2013 4:24:25

I have T Mobile. Have had them for years now. I love them. They recently gave me a free month of survice, just for being a long-standing customer. I thought that was pretty cool. I will say that the net is one thing I still have problems with using on my Galaxy S relay. Now that I've downloaded Aqua mail for my email, I can now, with some fiddling, read my emails. I do a lot of surveys online for money however and I've not yet been able to take a survey on my phone. I just can't figure out how to access all the check boxes and such. I could take them with my Nokia running talks, just fine. But with my Relay, I dont' know how to access them all. For me though, this is not a reason to give up on Android. Yeah, it seems they have a way to go in providing accessibility, but from what I've read, it's much better than it used to be and my feeling is, it'll only get better.
Take Care,
Dawnielle

firefox beta will help you with the web

Post 25 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Saturday, 16-Nov-2013 0:38:10

Hello to all. Is it me or does t-mobile nail it on the audio side of things? People ask me if I'm on a land line all the time. T-mobile is really awesome where I live. I rarely drop to edge. I really enjoy t-mobile. I have yet ot miss a call or text. Sprint used to delay my texts at times or drop calls on me.

Post 26 by starfly (99956) on Monday, 18-Nov-2013 9:04:19

If I may, my journey has come to a pause with IOS, I have sense sold my Iphone5 will pick up with IOS when I get an Ipod or just wait for my jump plan to kick in and get a Iphone 5S. My reasons to leave wer probly childish but here they are: 1. As apple fixes IOS7m and pushes updates, these updates are eating away at my storage. Its fine if you have a 32 gig phone but I only had a 16 gig phone. I could not find an app on the ITunes app store other then TapTapsee that I could not have replaced with its android counter part. Well lets be fare some games but I have a game called TXTFL that I could play all day long. 3. I thought there would be a huge change from IOS6 to 7 boy was I wrong, so again no need to have the Iphone around. 4. Android is my main platform, no matter how long or much I pushed myself to like IOS its inflexibility drove me batty, no way to change the home screen, no app dror and IOS ability to share across the whole platform from each app is lacking. Lastly, I love the swipe keyboard for android, its voice dictation rocks and its typing acurcy works very well. IOS, no way to change keyboards. So I will come back maybe when apple is done patching up IOS and releases IOS8. Again, I am one person, my preferred platform is android, so its a given I will migrate back to android.

Post 27 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Thursday, 21-Nov-2013 22:36:45

Hello. Does anyone here have a nexus 5? I may get one and play with it. If I go back to android it will be nexus all the way. No samsung touch wiz or htc sense or whatever. Just pure android......

Post 28 by starfly (99956) on Friday, 22-Nov-2013 12:11:26

I had a galaxy S3 with no touch wiz, it was rooted but its sold as of this posting. I am going to fix a galaxy S2's screen, wait for a Kitcat update via a custom rom and then sell it.

Post 29 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Sunday, 24-Nov-2013 16:42:36

agreed. i'd like to try the nexus 5, though android OEM's only supporting their phones for 18 months really holds me back. I don't want to get screwed out of security updates, or patches or updates, when my phone isn't even out of contract.

Post 30 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2014 12:56:02

OK guys. I want to bring this back. I'm finding myself wanting to go back to the android world. here is my plan. Get an s 5 on tmobile. I have 318 dollars left on my iPhone 5. I'd actually like to hang on to this 5 for a bit. The main reason is taptapsee but I want to keep an IOS device around to begin with. I'd prob put CyanogenMod on the phone if I did not like the stock rom. I'd also like to keep the 5 as a back up phone. I really want to give android a legit second chance. I loved the audio on the samsung phones. I listen to a lot of music on my phone and I just really enjoyed the samsung audio over my iPhone. So is it true that google music can duck under music with talkback like what voiceover can do? Also how is the latest gmail and talkback? I had so much trouble with gmail. Also has anyone here played with fleksy? Thanks for all of your help.

Post 31 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2014 13:47:09

Have you considered the Moto G instead of the Nexus 5? It's $199 instead of $350. It doesn't ahve as much ram, as nice a screen or as good a camera which may or not matter to you depending on your vision.

Post 32 by starfly (99956) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2014 14:03:51

It does not have as nice of a camera as the S5, its got a 5 mega pixal camera. TapTapSee is coming to android with in about two months and we now have cam find. When you do decide give aqua mail a run for its money, it puts the gmail app in the trash can. I am speaking from a users point of view not someone who just dabils in android when it suits them. I suggest the nexus5, no over lay to have crap out on you when Samsung touchwiz decides to take a crap. Yes, Samsung touch wiz does crap on itself here and there. If you get a nexus5, Motorola X or yes G your getting a stock android experience out of the box. Food for thought from a person who uses android on a daily bases.

Post 33 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Friday, 04-Apr-2014 2:05:21

Hello. I'm thinking of getting a play edition s5 if I can. If not then I'll try Samsung's rom. I can always install CyanogenMod on my phone as well. I need a phone with really good reception and radio performance and call quality. I don't know if the motorola g is like motorola of the past. LG has not been known for the best reception last I checked.

Post 34 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Friday, 04-Apr-2014 2:27:40

OK guys. I'm actually open to the nexus 5. How is the call audio on it? is it in the samsung league? Also how does music sound on it. I'm really open to the nexus 5. Also have you guys been able to use HI Q mp3 recorder to record in stereo on the phone? I'd get the 32 gb version. I suppose I could live without an sd card slot. I love a lot of music at my finger tips.

Post 35 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Friday, 04-Apr-2014 7:34:45

Well guys I have made a decision. I'm more than likely going for the galaxy s 5 play edition. That is honestly the best way to go. Either that the HTC 1 play edition. That is the 2014 model I'd go for. That one sounds really good as well. So this is a few months down the road. Either way I'm going stock android and that's that.

Post 36 by starfly (99956) on Sunday, 06-Apr-2014 10:30:23

to answer your question about the nexus5 sense this is my everyday driver, ASR records quite well in stario it seems to me, it holds a signal better then my wifes note III even when the note III is on WYFI. calling. Also, I could not agree more Austin with the decision to go pure android or stock android. I to took the pledge to on run stock android devices because while custom roms are great from what I noticed something seems to be broke, not working at the time or when updating the rom it crashes during the update.

Post 37 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Tuesday, 08-Apr-2014 13:18:09

Hello to all. I'm actually going to get the tmobile version of the htc 1 m8 and wait for the google play rom to come out. I heard that htc sense 6 is decent with talkback but cannot confirm that. The HTC 1 is defanatly the phone I want. The main reason is for the unibody construction of it. Plus I don't have to remove the back for the sd slot. Plus I like to listen to the occasional fm radio which the 1 has as well.

Post 38 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Monday, 14-Apr-2014 7:04:45

Well guys the htc has been ordered. But it's back ordered. The phone came out on Friday. So I'll keep you all posted.

Post 39 by starfly (99956) on Monday, 14-Apr-2014 10:34:15

please let me know if HTC took my feedback about talkback not being able to read the signal status of wyfi, moble network in the notification tray.

Post 40 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Wednesday, 16-Apr-2014 11:49:39

good choice. I'll probably never go samsung again, because their phones are
made out of cheep plastic, that looks like crap, and isn't very durable.

Post 41 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Tuesday, 22-Apr-2014 15:38:41

OK. I should have the phone tomorrow. I'll let you know about the htc signal strength stuff for sure.

Post 42 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 23-Apr-2014 21:22:41

thanks outside of the signal status I actually like the HTC m7 can weight to hear about the M8.

Post 43 by Hongsen (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 24-Apr-2014 3:49:41

Also, if it's not too much trouble, could you please post about how accessible the HTC One M8 is? I have a friend who is thinking of getting one of those but he would like to know is it as accessible as compare to a Samsung Galaxy with Touchwiz UI or Nexs? I'll be glad to have any comments that anyone can offer me in terms of general accessibility such as the accessibility of the home screens, notifications area, keyboard, etc. I know he could always switch to a custom launcher but if the notifications area is not fully accessible, it will pose quite a bit of a problem.

Once again, thanks a lot for any comments and suggestions anyone can offer regarding this. All comments, advices and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
-Hong Sen

Post 44 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Friday, 02-May-2014 5:29:53

Hello to all. I'm returning the htc 1 to tmobile and getting the google play edition. I can't access the status bar for some reason on this phone. any ideas? i can't tell the signal strength or anything with ttalkback... it's so weird. Does the Google play version have this issue? Does anyone here have an htc 1 google play edition? I don't care if it's this year's version or last year's.

Post 45 by starfly (99956) on Friday, 02-May-2014 8:03:14

having a google play device like the nexus5 and no skin like HTC sense, I can inform you Austin that you can see the signal status of your carier and wyfi. Thank you for posting this issue, its as I figured, HTC has not fixed this issue yet.

Post 46 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Saturday, 03-May-2014 13:07:58

Hello to all. I'm actually getting a nexus 5. I should have it on Monday.

Post 47 by starfly (99956) on Sunday, 04-May-2014 17:00:20

Good luck with the nexus5, I have the 32 gig model from google play and will hold on to this phone until it dies. Even when the silver android project replaces the nexus line.

Post 48 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Tuesday, 06-May-2014 8:03:50

Hello. I love this freaking phone. :) I may get the nexus 6. I have a question. I can't get the OK Google hotword to work consistantly. I think it's pretty cool. I have updated everything. I turned off talkback once and that worked one time but after that it did not work again. Any ideas why this is not working? It does not work in the google app itself and on the homescreen. I don't have my tmobile service on it because my sim card from my iPhone did not work in it. I'm goign to go do that today. Do you know if the tmobile hd voice thing works on it? It worked on my iPhone 5 without any issues. I have a friend of mine on tmobile with a 5S.

Post 49 by starfly (99956) on Tuesday, 06-May-2014 20:54:27

yes, also, to get google's hot word to work, suspend talkback, tap where the mic to speak is and say your search. Now, say okay google again with out talkback on it works. At this time, the okay google hot word does not work and several tickets have been filed. Also, tell your nexus5 to call google plex and press 0. Its a heck of a weight but you can ask for the accessibility team.

Post 50 by starfly (99956) on Tuesday, 06-May-2014 20:56:47

Oh, the HD voice does work and sounds quite clear. Sorry should have answered this in my last post.

Post 51 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Wednesday, 07-May-2014 18:06:43

Hello. This phone is amazing. The audio of this thing on tmobile is land line quality. The OK google thing is doable for now. It is a bit of trial and error but I'm sure it will be resolved in the future. I may get the nexus 6 down the road. If anything google will keep the google play thing going. I did not want to get the htc 1 just encase the signal strength thing did not work on that phone either.

Post 52 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 07-May-2014 20:46:00

first off I know you have updated your talkback, I hope, second, either try apex or nova launcher, I know nova allows you to place a search bar with google search and voice search on your home screens. Also, nova launcher has jesters like pinch in or out, swipe up or down. one of these can be set with the google voice search.

Post 53 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Tuesday, 13-May-2014 22:13:04

Hello. Can you have custom sms tones for contacts? I found custom ringtones but no sms tones. Thank you very much.

Post 54 by starfly (99956) on Wednesday, 14-May-2014 10:50:05

yes but it is app depended on text tones. This means you can download chomp SMS and set a text tone.

Post 55 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Monday, 07-Jul-2014 1:06:20

Hello to all. My android journey has come to an end for good for the moment. I just really missed IOS. It was a lot of things that bought me back to IOS. Android is just not for me.
